SCOTTISH TARTAN SASHimage of Scottish Tartan Sashes
For the Highlander hoping to bear the look of a "Great Kilt" but whose empty sporran whispers the advantages of owning a more affordable "modern kilt", a long matching Tartan Sash may be just the ticket to fool both the crowd and the banker. These Tartan sashes are a perfect match in fabric and pattern to our men's modern Kilts and can easily make up for much of Great Kilt material that the modern Kilt has dropped on the cutting floor. The Sash is long and wide enough to be looped from the hip across the back and chest leaving plenty of extra hanging that can be pleated and pinned off at the shoulder with a nice brooch. And for goodness sakes acquire one for the Lass too, (for whom the sash design was intended); for what kinda man would ye be if she were to be left standin there all alone without a Tartan Sash to match the pride of her favorite Laddy?

The modern fly plaid originated with the traditional Féileadh Mòr (Great Plaid) worn in the Scottish Highlands. The Great Plaid was a large piece of cloth, which by the 16th century measured up to 9.0 yards in length, half of which was pleated and belted about the waist, while the upper half was draped over the left shoulder, was then gathered in front and could be used as a cloak and hood during inclement weather.

The modern fly plaid harkens back to that garment and was introduced in the 18th century when fashion dictated a switch to the modern kilt. The fly plaid replaced that portion of the Great Kilt that was draped over the shoulder. It is today typically worn in the same tartan or colour as the modern kilt, and should be made from the same fabric so that the sett and colours match exactly. It is typically worn with a jacket that has epaulets, but this is not mandatory, and brooch.
