The first kilts appeared in the late 16th century in the form of the great kilt, a full length garment with an upper half that could be worn as a cloak draped over the shoulder or over the head. The word "Kilt" comes from the Scots, however the word itself has a Scandinavian origin. The Scots word derives from the Old Norse "Kjalta", from Norse settlers who wore similar pleated, but non-tartan garments. The small kilt (Phillabeg) or walking kilt (casual kilt), more similar to today’s modern kilts didn't develop until the late 17th to early 18th century. These kilts are essentially just the bottom half of the great kilt. Traditionally kilts are made out of woolen cloth in a tartan pattern. Some non-traditional wearers or the small kilt will often attempt a great kilt look by adding a fly or sash around their shoulder kept in place with a cloak pin or brooch.
