GREEMAN "SPEAK NO EVIL" CANDLE HOLDERNobleWares Image of Speak No Evil Greenman Statue Candle Holder 8762 by Pacific Trading 8762 PAC TRAD
This wonderful Greenman Candle Holder looks as if it came right out of the pages of some magical medieval forest legend, deeming that wisdom is no longer conveyed only by monkeys. With his leafy branched arms raised to cover his mouth, this anthropomorphic Tree Ent is distraught at the possibility that an act of evil might be spoken from his lips. The entire statue candle holder is made in cold cast resin, and has been hand painted to bring every minute detail to life. Each Greenman Candle Holder has a felt lined base and stands approximately 5 inches tall. Each candle holder design (8761 See No Evil, 8760 Hear No Evil, 8762 Speak No Evil) can be purchased separately or as a complete set for additional savings.

SEE NO, HEAR NO, SPEAK NO
Just as there is disagreement about the origin of the phrase, there are differing explanations of the meaning of "see no evil, hear no evil, speak no evil." In Buddhist tradition, the tenets of the proverb are about not dwelling on evil thoughts. In the Western world both the proverb and the image are often used to refer to a lack of moral responsibility on the part of people who refuse to acknowledge impropriety, looking the other way or feigning ignorance. It has also been used to stand for a code of silence in gangs, or organized crime. An ancient representation of the 'no see, no hear, no say, no do' can be found in four golden figurines in the Zelnik Istvan Southeast Asian Gold Museum. These golden statues date from the 6th to 8th century. The figures look like tribal human people with not very precise body carvings and strong phallic symbols. This set indicates that the philosophy comes from very ancient roots.
