This Grey Civil War Kepi was worn by soldiers and officers of the Southern States during the course of the civil war. In addition to the typical grey color fabric that Confederate troops often wore, colors and braids were designed into the caps to indicate the officer rank and military branch of the wearer.

The uniforms of the Civil War helped distinguish between the Union soldiers of the North, and the Confederate soldiers from the south. But early in the war, uniforms were provided by states, towns and wealthy individuals. This resulted in a confusing variety of styles and colors on both sides. As the war went on, a standard uniform design emerged. Over time, blue became the official color for the North and gray for the Confederate uniforms. Uniforms used color, braid, buttons, and other insignia for identification of branch and rank. Buff (Cream color) for General Staff & Engineers, Red for Artillery Yellow for Cavalry, French Blue for Infantry, and Black for Medical.
