Similar to sword used in Akira Kurosawa's classic 1954
action drama "Seven Samurai."
The Japanese, with typical candor, referred to
this as a Horse Killing Sword. Due to its size it was
rarely worn and most often carried. Much heavier than
a katana, the No Dachi could easily cause grevious wounds
on an attack, but it is not as maneuverable or fast as
a katana, and so defences against them tended to be easier
- assuming it didn't hit on the first strike. This sword
was not well suited to thrusting attacks, but more suited
to downward slashes.The huge
blade has awesome cutting power. Circa 1300.
Made of
tough high carbon steel, it is patterned after an original
in a private collection and looks similar to the sword
carried by Toshiro
Mifune, the charismatic Japanese actor best known
for his roles in Akira Kurosawa's masterpieces in the
1950's and 1960's "7 Samurai".
Hilt parts
are blued steel. Handle is wood covered in suede and cord.
58 1/2" overall, 40" blade. No scabbard available
at this time.
